Day 48: Introduction to District 3-- Islam

Objective:
  • HHG Tributes of 2018 will compare the three main monotheistic belief systems and create a chart showing their findings.
  • HHG Tributes of 2018 expand their vocabulary as it relates to The Growth of Islam and Muhammad.
Key Points:

1. "Islam" means "Peace through the submission to God."

2. People who follow the teachings of Islam are called Muslims. "Muslim" means "anyone or anything that submits itself to the will of God".

3) 25% of the world is Muslim. Along with Judaism and Christianity, it is considered to be one of the three Abrahamic traditions often referred to as "People of the Book."

Step 1 DO NOW:

"For the west, much of the history of Islam has been obscured behind a veil of fear and misunderstanding."

What do you think this statement means. Are you familiar with the word Islam and perhaps its meaning? What are some facts and misconceptions you have about Islam and its people?

Step 2: We are going to take a look at Monotheistic Belief Systems. Place the terms in the word bank in the appropriate spaces on the chart. If any terms are listed more than once, they will be used more than once. The number in the corner of each box signifies how many responses need to be placed in that square.

Step 3: The following video will introduce us to one of the most influential individuals in history, Muhammad. After viewing the video, you will complete a vocabulary sheet that will introduce them to terms associated with Islam, and we will create a parallel timeline showing events from Muhammad's life, and events that were taking place at the same time in other areas of the world. So, as you watch the film, take notes on the video.

Homework: Look up the District 3: Vocabulary using a dictionary or encyclopedia resource (online or print) and then write the definition in your own words. When you are finished, copy and paste your words and definitions into this form.
