Day 28: Feudalism vs. Manorialism (10/11/12)

7.6.3. Understand the development of feudalism, its role in the medieval European economy, the way in which it was influenced by physical geography (the role of the manor and the growth of towns), and how feudal relationships provided the foundation of political order.

SS Objective: The Junior Historians of 2018 will be able to describe the difference between feudalism and manorialism and explain various components of each.

Step 1: DO NOW: Do you think living on a manor in feudal Europe would be easier or more difficult than living in Los Angeles in the 21st century? Why? Explain with details and complete sentences. Watch your grammar!

When you finish, use the Quizlet flashcards to review Medieval Europe vocabulary. There will be a quiz on Monday!

Step 2: Review Video. Track the screen as we watch this video to review feudalism.
Focus: What were three inventions that developed during the middle ages that changed farming?

Step 3: Manorialism. The video mentioned that manors were self-sufficient. "Manorialism" is the economic system that existed on a fief or a manor.  Make a copy of this picture and label the parts of the manor by moving the boxes to the correct area. Use the guide of Crevecoeur-en-Auge (below) to help you. You may work with your partner.

Step 4: A Feudal Contract. Read this feudal contract and make a list with your partner of the things that John, a peasant, must do by signing this contract.

Early finishers: Check out this website, then look at a view examples. Focus: Why do you think knights needed a coat of arms?

Now, create your own coat of arms. You may do this on
  • Google Draw (Go to your Google Drive, click create, then choose Drawing
  • Notebook paper.
Step 5: Exit slip. Complete this exit slip by joining the room: 701125. You may begin when you are ready. Then close your computer and silently read.

Homework. Read an introduction to Christianity in the Middle Ages. Make sure to include full thinking tracks (thoughtful highlights, define unknown words, make connections to prior knowledge, ask/answer questions, make predictions, paragraph summaries). Don't forget to turn in the homework completion form!
