Day 18: The Fall of the Roman Empire (Part 1) (10/27/12)

Standards:
7.1.1 Study the early strengths and lasting contributions of Rome... and its ultimate internal weaknesses (e.g., rise of autonomous military powers within the empire, undermining of citizenship by the growth of corruption and slavery, lack of education, and distribution of news).
7.1.2. Discuss the geographic borders of the empire at its height and the factors that threatened its territorial cohesion.

SS Objective: The HHG Tributes 2018 will be able to discuss the factors that weakened the Roman Empire and ultimately lead to its fall.

Step 1: Do now: What is a cause and what is an effect? Give an example of a cause/effect relationship from this past weekend. Be clear about what the cause is and what the effect is.
For example: "Cause: This weekend I went hiking and rock climbed 8 waterfalls in the Eaton Canyon. Effect: My abs and legs are sore."

Step 3: Read this handout. In your own words, summarize the three main reasons for the fall of the Roman Empire in the comments section of today's lesson.

Step 4: Choose one of the weaknesses of the Roman Empire to discuss with your partner. Be prepared to share your ideas with the class.

Step 4: What caused the fall of Rome?
Together we will color code the boxes into Economic(money)/Social, Military, and political factors of the fall of the Roman Empire. Then, you will cut out and arrange the boxes to show the cause and effects of these factors. Finally, you will glue them in the correct order on your colored sheet of paper. You may work with your shoulder partners. (Voice level 2.)

Step 5: Homework: You may use any of the resources I have given you links to (readings & videos) to answer these questions about Rome. Please complete the form individually.

  2. The story was about how the western part of Rome collapsed. It fell from three main reasons: political instability, economic and social issues, and weakening frontiers. In 330 C.E., the emperor Constantine took a step that changed the future of Rome. He moved his capital 850 miles to the east, to the ancient city of Byzantium. He renamed the city New Rome. Later it was called Constantinople. Before Constantine, emperors had tried sharing power over the vast empire between co-rulers. After Constantine’s reign, power was usually divided between two emperors, one based in Rome and one in Constantinople. Rome became the capital of just the western part of the empire. The emperors in Rome soon found themselves threatened by invading Germanic tribes. In 410 C.E., one of these tribes attacked and looted Rome itself. Finally, in 476 C.E., the last emperor in the west was driven from his throne. The western half of the empire began to dissolve into separate kingdoms ruled by separate tribes. This was how the Western Empire of Rome fell.

  6. 1. The Romans were power hungry and could never sufficiently share power.

    2. They had heavy taxes and debts.

    3. They were a very big empire. This made the empire hard to defend.

  7. The people of Rome would actually kill each other to get the crown of a dead emperor. That, or the would just kill the emperor themselves to take over. The citizens of Rome had to pay heavy taxes and probably weren't able to keep their homes.

  8. The empire of Rome didn't last forever like the Romans thought it would. The Romans never solved any problems to find solutions so that's one of the reason the empire of Rome didn't last. They murdered the emperor's so that their army can rule their land and take over. They also didn't have as much due to the rise of taxes. The huge empire was hard to guard because there was all of that space that still needed to be protected.Constantinople took over and then called it New Rome then they got threatened by Germanic tribes. The Empire lasted 1000 of years later and the fall of Rome marks the ancient world.

  11. What caused the fall of Rome is money because to finance Roman huge armies the citizens had to pay heavy taxes and the taxes hurt the economy and drove some people to poverty then the spirit of citizenship died and what caused the fall of Rome is land the Romans had huge amount of lands so it was hard to defend all of the Roman land and some tribes pressed hard on the western empire of Rome so some of the tribes who settled in Rome didn't care about Romes languages religions and other stuff. And Rome divide into different tribes so it was easy for outside enemies to conquer the land and tribes in Rome.

  13. They thought that this empire would be the best empire that was ever known but the empire collapsed for 3 main reasons. Political instability because everyone wanted to be emperor so they sometimes murdered them or waited until they died and then fought for the power. Economic and social issues because people had to pay lots of taxes and citizenship declined. Weakening frontiers because the empire was so large that is was hard for them to defend them and so they stopped defending them.

  14. The three main reasons Rome's empire fell is because:1.They had an unorganized political system with corrupt senate's and governor's and sometimes even emperor's.2.Their economic structure was out of balance and some citizens thought taxes were to high and that was part of their population decrease.3.The huge size of the empire made it hard to defend, because by the 300's,Germanic tribes were already pressing on the western side borders of the empire.

  15. The story The End of the Empire in the West is basically talking about how half of the empire collapsed. It is also talking about how when an emperor died the would fight to have the old's emperor's crown.

  16. The historians thought the fall was created by three main reasons one is Political Instability because when a old emperor died the people would often fight for the power to rule. Also to finance Rome's large armies the people had to pay heavy taxes which mad people poor. Finally because of Romes large empire was hard to defend.

  17. Emperors were usually murdered or when they die people/citizens fight to be on top. New Rome was later called Constantinople. The Byzantines wove Roman heritage also. Rome was an impact to others with their heritage. The armies fell into the armies hands who help leaders into power.

  18. The reading was about the fall of Rome and the three main reasons why it fell apart. One main reason was that Rome had a lot of problems that no one could or new how to solve.Political instability also contributed to their problems and the last of their problems was the huge size of the empire because it made it hard to defend the huge empire.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Romes fist problem was politics. The Romans never learned to have one stable leader. Their second problem was finance. The Roman armies cost although of money and often caused people to go into poverty. Their last problem was all the wars they had to fight. Because Rome was so big many people wanted to conquer he land and lots of people died

  20. Rome fell from Political Instability, Economic and Social Issue, and Weakening Frontier.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Rome lost a lot of power due to many economic and land crisis. The people that were in charge were dying out and people were being killed just to be called Mr.Bigshot, money became a problem for that exact reason common people were paying lots of taxes to pay for the emperors armies. The forces of Rome were weakening, many people lost loyalty to Rome because of the up and down emperors and horrible economical problems.

    ReplyDelete
  22. The reading was basically on how Rome's empire came to an end.Even though the Romans had a powerful soldier and an empire they had problems with making peace, economic and social issues, were dishonest and weakening frontiers.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Rome never solved the problems of how to peacefully transfer political power. When an emperor died, ambitious rivals often fought each other for the emperor’s crown.emperors were regularly murdered. To finance Rome’s huge armies, its citizens had to pay heavy taxes.Trade also suffered. The big empire was hard to manage. An unfaithful emporer whos dishonest can collect extra money.they cant eat the citizens steal then they have to buy more soliders then it makes i worse. If their on the outside protected that i the middle nobodies watching the middle

Real power fell into the hands of the armies, who could help leaders into power or destroy them.Economic and Social Issues:Rome’s huge armies, its citizens had to pay heavy taxes. These taxes hurt the economy and drove many people into poverty. Trade also suffered.3. Weakening Frontiers:By the 300s, Germanic tribes were pressing hard on the western borders of the empire. Many of these people settled inside the empire and were recruited into the army.

  30. It was like they were weakening and the army was like if you don't pay me I won't work and they never got a better leader and they had alot of issues

    ReplyDelete
  31. The reading is about the Rome killing each other because they have no money and food. When the Empires sent the armies to fix this people were coming in from the border taking there land. Then the Empire went to Turkey. He told them they would be in Rome's armies. Also people killed every Empire there was so that the could change the laws and rules but they all failed because whenever they killed them a new Empire would come.

    ReplyDelete
  32. the reading was basically on how Rome's empire fell it fell because the economic and social things wernt good thy had very high taxes witch made the people poor

    ReplyDelete
  33. Rome had a very unstable number of soldiers because even though they were the biggest nations there weren't that many people who were in the military. It got to a point where Rome had to start recruiting or demanding people to go to war. Even those from other lands that they had invaded. The social status in Rome was basically that you were to pay taxes at however much the economy needed. In Rome, the polpitical instability was mostly due to the emperors getting killed.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Political Instability is about Rome never solved the problems of how to be peacefully transfer political power.and taxes hurt the economy because they drove many people away and the taxes also trade suffered. The soldiers had little loyalty to Rome.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Rome never solved their problems of how to peacefully transfer political power to a leader . When an emperor died, ambitious rivals often fought each other for the emperor’s crown. To finance Romes huge armies , it;s citizens had to pay heavy taxes.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Rome never solved their problems of political power. They didn't care if an emperor died they just replaced them. When people there was barley enough people to farm so whenever a new person came they would tell them that they had to be in the war. That's why their wall is failing.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Rome had many problems, from Political Instability, ,Weakening Frontiers, and The Fall of Rome. In the Political Instability, emperors were usually murderd by senators. Sometimes, the people fought to become emperor.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Rome didn't solve the problem on how to transfer political power and when an emperor passes away some rivals they would fight each other for the crown. For the soldiers in the big armies the people had to pay a lot of tax money and trade. The empire was big and hard to keep up and the bad emperor can receive extra money by doing bad things. The citizens had to steal from their fellow citizens then the emperor would have to get more soldiers.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Rome never solved the problems of how to peacefully transfer political power.Rome's taxes was high. Also Rome was running out of solders

    ReplyDelete
  40. Rome had some problems that were never to be solved. When the death of an emeoror came to determined rivals had fought each other for to be the next emperor.Paying heavy takes was an order to finance Romes huge armies. It was so bad that citizens could not eat they had to do some stealing. Most emperors were very disthonest.

    ReplyDelete
  41. It's how Rome picked this man, first of all he lied so they chose him.But any they had him or what ever, and he start killing them. Then people start geting old.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Rome never solved any of the problems. they had to many kings and they figured if they kill the king they could go back to their old lives. But they were wrong.when They killed one king anther one came. The army fell apart because the citizens were fighting and stilling because they were broke. So they said lets go stop them but they could not leave the boarder because invaders might break in so the army broke down.

    ReplyDelete
  43. So the three were about Political instability , Economic and the social issues , and the military . So the Political instability was about how the like kill their emperor like every time . The Economic and the social issues was about their taxes .
