Illinois Leadership Summit

Objectives:

  • Illini Leaders will be able to explain that stories can be a way to learn a person’s values, as well as their skills and mindsets
  • Illini Leaders will be able to articulate their own story of selves, and in so doing begin to identify their values, skills and mindsets
  • Illini Leaders will be able to understand the shared values, skills, and mindsets within their classroom community, laying the foundations for tomorrow’s asset-mapping

Make a copy of today's document

Do Now: What is your favorite movie, and what makes it exciting? What types of emotions did this movie make you feel? What lesson or message did you take away?

Step 1: What is your definition of "Leadership"? Who is one person you think embodies leadership? When you are finished, scroll through and look at the definitions that your teammate's posted.

Step 2: Small group discussion:
  • Do you see yourself as a leader? Why or why not?
  • Do you want to be a leader? Why or why not?
  • Do you see examples of leadership in your community? If so, who are they? If not... why not?
  • What are the benefits of being a leader?
  • What are the risks of being a leader?
Step 3: The Story of Self. What can stories tell us about other people?

Together, we will watch James’s video and answer the questions in your document:

Step 4: Challenge. Choice. Outcome. A story of self is a story you tell that communicates the VALUES that inspire you to lead. Identifying the parts of the exemplar stories.

Step 5: Writing the your story of self. Brainstorming and creating your own story.

Step 6: Small group practice & feedback. Facilitators will lead small group through sharing their stories, filling out the notes for storytellers, and giving feedback using the sentence starters.
