Discoveries and Inventions of the Scientific Revolution

Do now: Read the article What is the Scientific Revolution? Read, highlight, track-- be ready to summarize as a class.

Class notes: Origins of the Scientific Method. What ideas contributed to the development of the scientific method? How can you see these ideas come out in the method?



Class notes: Complete the notes on the following famous scientists and inventions from the Scientific Revolution.



Homework (due on Thursday): 

1. District 8&9 Test Corrections.

2. Personal Profiles. Bacon and Descartes: Read, track, highlight and summarize these short passages about Bacon and Descartes and their contributions to the scientific method.

3. Building a timeline. In this district, you are learning about the discoveries and inventions of the Scientific Revolution-- things that essentially made it possible for us to have all the cool stuff we have today. From spaceships to ipods, the Scientific Revolution laid the foundation for modern science.

Create a timeline using this template.

Label the events related to the Scientific Revolution using red and events related to other things blue. Put a picture (insert image by url) by each event to represent it.

Scientific Revolution:
1609 - Galileo uses his telescope to study planets
1590 - Zacharias Janssen invents the microscope
1543 - Copernicus publishes his theory of the sun-centered solar system
1687 - Sir Isaac Newton publishes Principia Mathematica

Other Events:
1690 - John Locke argues that people have certain natural rights
1533 - Francisco Pizarro conquers the Incas
1620 - The Mayflower sets sail for North America
1632 - Construction begins on the Taj Mahal in India

Intro to the Scientific Revolution (District 10)

Objective: The HHG Tributes of 2018 will be able to explain the catalysts for the Scientific Revolution.

Do now. Why do we study history? Why is History awesome? (P.s. the best response will be this week's FB Spotlight on a Tribute!)

As you already know, during the 1500s,Europe was undergoing dramatic changes. The Renaissance was under way. During the Renaissance, great advances were made in art, writing, and education. And if this wasn't huge in and of itself, there was also the Protestant Reformation (Revolution) which set off an avalanche of radical new religious and political ideas. All of this set the stage for a revolution in thinking in another domain-- Science!

Compare and Contrast. How did science change after the Scientific Revolution?
Use this template to create a Venn Diagram that compares science from before the Scientific Revolution to science after the Scientific Revolution.

Complete the diagram using these phrases:
  • Scientific method for research
  • People tried to learn more about the sun and planets
  • No organized method for research
  • Based on Biblical and church teachings
  • Very widespread and popular
  • Not very widespread or popular
  • Attempt to learn more about the world
  • Based on careful observation and use of reason

Effects of the Reformation

Objective: The HHG Tributes of 2018 will be able to explain 5 major effects of the Reformation, as well explain how the Catholic Church responded to it, aka the Counter-Reformation.

Do now. Read and analyze the primary source. Can you put the quote into your own words? Which of the causes of the Reformation does this quote best support?

Class notes. Aside from the creation of new denominations of Christianity, what were the effects of the Reformation? Today we will look at a broad overview, then over the course of the week we will look at a few in more detail.

Ohio is the Buckeye state -- its capital is Columbus 
Indiana's the place to go if it's racing you enjoy
And now we're not too far away from Chicago, Illinois 

If we're lucky in Kentucky our horse might just be winning
Tennessee's the place to be if you like great singing 
Down in Alabama, we'll stay in Birmingham
I'll see you next in Georgia with a golf club in my hand

There's Madison, Wisconsin, and Olympia in Washington

Phoenix, Arizona, and Lansing, Michigan.




Here's Honolulu; Hawaii's a joy

Jackson, Mississippi, and Springfield, Illinois

South Carolina with Columbia down the way

And Annapolis in Maryland on Chesapeake Bay.




They have wonderful clam chowder.




Cheyenne is in Wyomin' and perhaps you make your home in

Salt Lake City out in Utah, where the Buffalo roam

Atlanta's down in Georgia, and there's Bismarck, North Dakota

And you can live in Frankfort in your old Kentucky home.




Salem in Oregon; from there we join

Little Rock in Arkansas; Iowa's got Des Moines

Sacramento, California; Oklahoma and its city

Charleston, West Virginia, and Nevada, Carson City.




That's all the capitals there are!
